Sketchbook Rough

Here is something I've roughed out in my sketchbook. I say rough I got conscious with it halfway through and stopped drawing it in pen and completed it with a pencil. That never happens with me. It needs massively reworking though. Reet time for a brew indeed; click to enlarge the above.

Review

Looking out the window; it looks like rain on the cards. Last night I was looking over this months Creative Review illustration annual, I cannot make my mind up whose work I'm liking the best in there. It's worth a look though certainly.

Discard Love

Well readers the above is where my head is. You can keep love for me at the moment. Lets just say I had to digest a nugget of information that I didn't want to hear. And if there reading this; Yes I did think a lot of you. But hey ho I'm probably gonna end up being that gent many folk have joked with me about. That's the forty something with the twenty something for other reasons than my looks. Reet at least there's a brew and a book.

Summer Reading

Well I've not updated my blog in a few days, but as ever I've been busy. I did last thursday go down London for the private view of the RCA summer show. I chatted with the talented Mike Redmond about his work.I digested some cracking animation films and bumped into Harry hill along the way. I've been on with some drawings for a website, I've had some good ideas, I've had a haircut and I've acquired more books to read, including the new Jason graphic novel and a fab book on Bawdens design work.

Nice Smell

The above is something I drew weeks back, and I thought I'd share this little sketchbook work with you. I'll be honest I may rework this image from scratch. During my lunch; I was reading an article on a very expensive mens fragrance house that are selling a new fragrance through one high end store. But it was talking about the dawn of the internet making it easy to buy fragrance or whatever and it being all too easy. But as a small exclusive company they want there customers to work at obtaining there fragrance. They solidly believe once you have discovered there fragrance there is no turning back. Which in a way I can digest that principal.

Brew Drama

Well today the sun shone in Costa del Doncaster this afternoon; I've completed a few tasks I'm well behind in the brew count today. If this continues I'm taking myself to a doctor, possibly a specialist in this field. Today I've caught wind of some ceramic moments I want to review and there are some more books I want to get my paws on.

Fiona Bruce

I've got to admit; tonight I've seen tv's Fiona Bruce in a new light. Her programme on the Beeb tracking evidence for one mans 18 year fight to prove his painting is by Monet was brilliant. I especially liked it when Fiona displayed her french dialogue at customs. By eck Fiona do an art programme in Donny and track me down....

Progressed

Well readers the above is a snippet from a commercial job I've been on with last week. Suffice to say though, this week I've progressed a little more watch this space!!!. Yesterday I went over to Ripon to Hornseys gallery to see the new Jonny hannah exhibition and it is indeed a winner in my book. Plus I finally met the man himself after years of being a fan and he's a real gent. I've bought a heap of books just for that mans book jacket design work "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck and "One more kilometre before we hit the shower" are my personal faves. I also met the talented Paul Bommer and Nick Appleton and chatted over a few pints; all in all a great saturday afternoon.

Note to Scribblers

Here is a note to all illustrators don't draw naked women on postcards then scribble client phone numbers opposite said naked woman. I got asked about the above "And what will she be doing for you Al". With complete honesty I told them its a clients number. "Yes Al of course it is". "But it is". So scribblers don't scribble phone numbers next to naked women drawings.

Sunny Day in Donny

Well readers at the time of writing; I've been staring at the screen since early doors I've not had any fresh air yet. Here above is something I worked up a little while back for a software company. click to enlarge the image. In the meanwhile I need a refreshing drink on this sunny day which all my neighbours seem to be enjoying. Oh and I'm loving "Progressed"...

Found

Yesterday I was out on my bike in the rain. I did indeed get soaked but I did find a balloon race card, which I've just posted off. It had flown all the way from Bolton; it was a stroke of luck on a wet rainy day. Today I've been drawing characters for a project hopefully it will all work out.

Donny Rovers Mascot

Well me being a Donny lad and a candidate that is always in awe of art direction and images that get talked about in the media; was and is still getting my head round this one. Donny Rovers have sacked there mascot aka Tracy Chandler 40 from Armthorpe who has worked unpaid as there mascot. Why because she posed for some tasteful photos to raise money for charity. Like this one above, the club say she disgraced the club. I could understand perhaps a bit more if Tracy was naked. Disgraced the club I'm not so sure; when there own players did a calendar posing naked. I think she deserves to be reinstated because I'm sure in her job role she makes fans young and old smile. In hindsight I think some of my illustration work is more shocking readers like above.

Here Goes

Now and again; I get emails asking what do I look like the man behind all this creative output. Well I look nowt like Alan Carr, I have more wrinkles and crow feet than him. I probably drink more tea than him. I probably cycle more miles than him aswell.

V&A

Well last night I learnt and read that the V&A illustration awards have been judged by the likes of Rob Ryan and others and the relevant parties awarded. I was chuffed to bits to read Mike Redmond from the RCA had won the student award. I taught Mike for a while when I was doing regular tutoring at the University of Salford. Big Well done Mike, much deserved sir. Above is a little house I drew out of boredom and feeling fed up.

By Eck

Well it looks a little duller over Donny today compared with this time yesterday. I did a splendid bike ride yesterday and won another puncture. Although I'm told it was a patch malfunction. The above character is based on a vulgar conversation I overheard in deepest Donny the other day I tell thee; it's where real life begins in my region, but you have to love it.

Nice

Today I had one of those life changing life defining conversations with a taxi driver. I think I may feel a little better for that talk. It is indeed a small world I feel folks. I've done a lot of tasks today but made five minutes to call in at the bookshop there are some new cycling books I want to get my paws on. There's a new book on David Millar I wouldn't mind reading for sure.
